CATARRO GENITAL II E III -/- O catarro genital ou metrite (inflamação do miométrio) é uma inflamação inespecífica no trato genital. Existem duas barreiras que impedem a chegada de germes ao interior do trato genital. As barreiras de tipo hemático (diferença de fluxo sanguíneo) e imunossupressão parcial (...) originada pela progesterona, superadas as barreiras, podem se apresentar inflamação no momento do parto ou após o mesmo e frequentemente é acompanhada de retenção de placenta. A principal causa é a deficiência de fatores nutricionais, que causam distúrbios no metabolismo normal do animal. Os catarros trazem problemas de infertilidade, anestro, aumento entre o intervalo entre partos (IEP), o que acarretam altas perdas econômicas na produção (FRAZER, 2005; GORDON, 1996). Podem se manifestar em diferentes graus, que caracterizam-se por fatores específicos; serão abordados os catarros de 2° e 3° grau. 4.1 Relação Sódio (Na) e Potássio (K) Um dos fatores nutricionais associados ao catarro genital é a deficiência de sódio ou o excesso de potássio, o problema existente entre o excesso ou deficiência de um mineral reside na presença imediata de um desequilíbrio homeostático entre a relação fisiológica dos mesmos e portanto um desequilíbrio no metabolismo (funcionamento normal do organismo). A relação potássio:sódio (K:Na) ideal situa-se entre 10-15:1 (DEHNING, 1987) e demonstrou-se que à medida que se amplia essa relação se agrava a eficiência reprodutiva. Ao haver um excesso de sódio no organismo altera-se o equilíbrio de potássio:sódio (K:Na), aumentando os níveis de sódio os níveis de potássio diminuem, causando principalmente problemas na síntese de hormonas sexuais, que por sua vez apresentam um efeito negativo no ciclo estral normal da fêmea, além de problemas no parto (partos distócicos), isto porque no córtex adrenal deve produzir-se aldosterona para regular a homeostase mineral, devido ao fato do substrato bioquímico para a síntese da aldosterona ser o mesmo que para a síntese das hormonas sexuais, nomeadamente estrogênios, portanto, estes não se produzem provocando menor contratilidade uterina, o que favorece a contaminação e colonização bacterial típica dos quadros de metrite. Em média, uma vaca de 600 kg com uma produção de leite de 15 kg/dia, requer uma dieta com 230 g/dia de potássio. As concentrações sugeridas pela NRC para bovinos de corte com dieta de matéria seca (MS) é de 0,6 – 0,7% e a concentração máxima de 3%. Para garantir esses níveis de exigências, as forragens apresentam entre 1 % e 4% de K, portanto são excelentes fontes desse mineral. Em geral, os grãos de cereais são deficientes, menos 0,5% de K, no entanto farelos de oleaginosas são uma boa fonte de suplementação. O excesso de fornecimento de sódio (Na) é relativamente raro, mas clinicamente resulta em achados semelhantes de acetonemia, além de enfraquecimento, retenção de placenta, inflamação do aparelho genital e distúrbios no funcionamento ovariano. As forrageiras possuem um teor deficiente em sódio, uma vez que tal elemento é considerado prejudicial às plantas. Uma das formas de garantir a exigência de sódio no animal, é a disponibilidade à vontade de sal mineral (NaCl) em cochos espalhados pela propriedade. De forma geral, o consumo de sódio por animal/ dia deve ser de 20 a 25 g, o que perfaz aproximadamente 50 g de NaCl/cab./dia, considerando-se um percentual de 39% de sódio nesse composto. Vale salientar que o sódio têm função reguladora, portanto, sua disponibilidade não deve ser maior que a exigência requerida pelo animal. 4.2 Relação do Fósforo (P) Outro fator associado com metrite é, o excesso de fósforo (P) na dieta, pode ser dado por uma excessiva ou inadequada suplementação mineral, por intensa fertilização nas pastagens, por utilização de pastos sumamente jovens ou pelo consumo de grandes quantidades de grãos (soja) e cereais. Simultaneamente, com o excesso de fósforo é frequentemente encontrada uma diminuição do teor de manganês no tecido uterino, como consequência a diminuição da resposta do útero aos estrogênios (DEHNING, 1987). Estes, por sua vez, são responsáveis pelo movimento uterino e por criar maior resistência às infecções do trato genital. O intervalo sugerido pelas instituições de pesquisa está entre 0,12 – 0,20% na dieta de MS. Porém esse intervalo depende de alguns fatores como a idade dos animais e a categoria em que se encontram. O fósforo é um elemento que encontra-se em constantes debates em empresas e instituições agropecuárias. Pesquisadores da Austrália revelaram que 0,12% de sódio na matéria seca estaria o mais próximo possível dos níveis exigidos pelos bovinos de corte, o que contradiz os 30% requeridos pela NRC. Contudo, experimentos realizados pela Embrapa, concluíram que uma dieta em matéria seca de forrageiras com 100%, 70% e 40% dos níveis exigidos de fósforo, tiveram ganho de peso semelhantes. Por exemplo, os animais que receberam 70% dos requisitos tiveram ganho de peso médio entre 0,500 e 0,600 g/dia, muito semelhante ao mesmo ganho quando se forneceram 100% dos requisitos do fósforo. Nas forrageiras a disponibilidade de fósforo depende da disponibilidade do mesmo no solo. Nos grãos de cereais e farelos de oleaginosas contêm de moderado a alto teor de P, e nos produtos de origem animal, como farinha de peixe, o teor de P é considerado alto. 4.3 Relação Cálcio (Ca) e Fósforo (P) O caso de fornecimento exagerado de fósforo causa um efeito inverso da relação cálcio:fósforo (Ca:P), ou seja, sendo o fósforo dominante, maior será o déficit absoluto ou relativo de cálcio, cujas manifestações clínicas no aspecto reprodutivo correspondem amplamente com aquelas do excesso de fósforo. Um excesso absoluto de fósforo na presença de um abastecimento suficiente de cálcio é menos prejudicial para a reprodução do que um fornecimento de fósforo de acordo com os requisitos na presença de níveis deficitários de cálcio (DEHNING, 1987). Isto porque o cálcio, regula a contratilidade do músculo liso, como no miométrio. O intervalo sugerido de cálcio na dieta em MS está entre 0,19 e 0,33%, dependendo de fatores como a idade dos animais e o ganho de peso diário. Por exemplo, uma vaca de 600 kg que produz 15 kg/leite/dia requer uma dieta que contenha 40 g/dia de cálcio. O teor tóxico de cálcio na MS de forrageiras, leguminosas e gramíneas é de 4,4%. Para suprir a exigência em cálcio do animal, para que previna os catarros genitais em seus diferentes graus, bem como demais doenças a dieta está alicerçadamente entre o fornecimento de ração concentrada com misturas como farinha de ossos e fosfato bicálcico com elevados teores de Ca, ou entre os volumosos como as gramíneas, leguminosas ou forrageiras. Vale destacar que as leguminosas possuem baixo teor de Ca em sua composição, entretanto é maior do que a presença em gramíneas. A alfafa é uma forrageira que possui bastante cálcio em sua composição e que pode ser todo disponível para o animal. Por fim, os grãos de cereais como milho, soja, sorgo, etc., possui baixo teor de cálcio. O déficit de cálcio em vacas leiteiras de alta produção traz consequências como a doença da vaca caída (hipocalcemia) devido a sua alta exigência do mineral, especialmente após o parto, isto, por sua vez, causa uma inércia uterina que dificulta a eliminação de bactérias adquiridas durante o parto, propiciando um ambiente adequado para a multiplicação e contaminação do trato genital. 4.4 Relação energia: proteína e Vitamina A O excesso de proteína ocorre frequentemente quando a alimentação é baseada em pastoreio, especialmente quando os animais recebem uma carga intensa de fertilizantes (com estrume ou nitrogênio) e, simultaneamente, é oferecido um suplemento concentrado rico em proteína (DEHNING, 1987). O excesso de proteína depende da quantidade de alimento consumido, sendo os animais de maior produção os mais afetados, uma vez que passam maior tempo para chegar ao peso ideal de abate (animais de corte), ou quando sua produção é potencialmente leiteira. As grandes quantidades de amônio produzido pelo processo de degradação da proteína nos ruminantes resultam numa sobrecarga prolongada no fígado, aumento dos níveis da enzima GOT (alterações hepáticas; que por sua vez resultam na apresentação de catarros genitais de grau II e III) e altos níveis da enzima GLDH. Estes distúrbios são agravados quando, ao mesmo tempo, há uma deficiência de energia. O excesso de proteína crua faz com que nas secreções uterinas se produzam mudanças no conteúdo dos minerais e um desequilíbrio entre os mesmos causando problemas reprodutivos de índole infecciosa e diminui adicionalmente a capacidade de sobrevivência dos espermatozoides e óvulos. A deficiência de vitamina A, também pode causar catarro genital. Recordando que as vitaminas são um grupo de compostos orgânicos essenciais no metabolismo necessário para o crescimento e o bom funcionamento do organismo. Entre estas, a vitamina A é considerada uma vitamina lipossolúvel que deriva dos carotenos presentes nos vegetais. Esta afeta a formação e manutenção da pele, membranas mucosas, ossos e dentes, retina e possui íntima relação com a reprodução. No último caso há falta de secreção da membrana mucosa do trato genital, o que produz susceptibilidade à invasão bacteriana (catarro genital II e III). O corpo obtém a vitamina A, fabricando-a a partir dos carotenos, precursores da vitamina A, que se encontram nos vegetais (forrageiras, leguminosas e gramíneas). O fornecimento de betacarotenos depende do conteúdo dos mesmos na ração. E se houver deficiência destes não pode haver formação de vitamina A, assim a porcentagem de falhas no crescimento do tecido endometrial leva a catarros genitais, mortalidade embrionária e abortos precoces. Una hermenéutica de la experiencia y el testimonio es la tarea actual de la teología. Eso se tratará de iniciar en las páginas siguientes. La propuesta que se hace en este estudio es indicar que sin experiencia y testimonio no es posible ni entender el cristianismo, ni proclamarlo, pues se puede quedar en un anuncio publicitario, o en una ideología en competencia, o en un mensaje inútil para el hombre de hoy. Se hace necesario volver a un protocristianismo, es decir, (...) a la estructura fundamental de la experiencia pascual de los primeros cristianos: la experiencia de la resurrección lleva ineluctablemente a contar esa experiencia y a expresarla en relatos testimoniales corroborados con la fuerza de la vida del testigo. Uno de los fenomenólogos de la nueva generación que sigue la línea de Husserl, Heidegger, Marion y Lévinas es Richard Kearney. Este filósofo irlandés, católico, propone una cuarta reducción fenomenológica, esto es, volver al eschaton enraizado en la existencia cotidiana: encontrar la voz y el rostro de lo más alto en lo más bajo. Es como la realización de aquella idea heideggeriana de que “Sólo aquello del mundo que es de poca monta llegará alguna vez a ser cosa.” . En (...) el lenguaje cotidiano, en la vida diaria, se encuentra una posibilidad de superar el escepticismo, la indiferencia y el hastío del mundo vuelto consumo y del hombre convertido en pieza del mercado. En el encuentro cara a cara se da la posibilidad de una revelación que hace de la relación con el otro, y especialmente con el extranjero, un maravillarse y nos implemente una duda, una sospecha y una desconfianza. La experiencia y el testimonio son la clave central de la revelación cristiana. Sin embargo, se puede apreciar que en diferentes estudios contemporáneos sobre el tema se insiste más en el testimonio que en la experiencia misma que da origen al testimonio. Urge la reflexión sobre la posibilidad y la efectividad de la experiencia y del testimonio, y más en un mundo en el que la idea de Dios o absoluto ya no tiene raíces en la metafísica representacional y no (...) cabe en los estrechos límites de un concepto. Las críticas realizadas al cristianismo en la época de la Modernidad han servido para purificar el mismo cristianismo, pues las representaciones idolátricas de Dios que se habían incrustado en él van siendo corregidas en la reflexión contemporánea: en la teología y en la filosofía. This article provides a conceptual map of the debate on ideal and non‐ideal theory. It argues that this debate encompasses a number of different questions, which have not been kept sufficiently separate in the literature. In particular, the article distinguishes between the following three interpretations of the ‘ideal vs. non‐ideal theory’ contrast: (i) full compliance vs. partial compliance theory; (ii) utopian vs. realistic theory; (iii) end‐state vs. transitional theory. The article advances critical reflections on each of these sub‐debates, and highlights (...) areas for future research in the field. (shrink)

In this article I argue that characterizations of anger as a hostile emotion may be mistaken. My project is empirically informed and is partly descriptive, partly diagnostic. It is descriptive in that I am concerned with what anger is, and how it tends to manifest, rather than with what anger should be or how moral anger is manifested. The orthodox view on anger takes it to be, descriptively, an emotion that aims for retribution. This view fits well with anger being (...) a hostile emotion, as retribution is punitive. I will argue that a different view of anger deserves our attention. On this alternative view, anger aims for recognition of harms done, rather than for the punishment of those who have committed them. I argue that we have reason to favour a strong view that excludes retribution from anger’s main aims. In addition, I offer a diagnosis of the reasons that led the retributive view of anger to become, and remain, orthodoxy. This diagnosis provides indirect reason to give my descriptive proposal serious consideration, for it highlights that the orthodox view has dominated folk and philosophical conceptions of anger for reasons that do not speak in favour of the view’s veracity. The view that anger is a hostile emotion will therefore emerge as in need of serious scrutiny. (shrink)

Trust is a core feature of the physician-patient relationship, and risk is central to trust. Patients take risks when they trust their providers to care for them effectively and appropriately. Not all patients take these risks: some medical relationships are marked by mistrust and suspicion. Empirical evidence suggests that some patients and families of color in the United States may be more likely to mistrust their providers and to be suspicious of specific medical practices and institutions. Given both historical and (...) ongoing oppression and injustice in American medical institutions, such mistrust can be apt. Yet it can also frustrate patient care, leading to family and provider distress. In this paper, I propose one way that providers might work to reestablish trust by taking risks in signaling their own trustworthiness. This interpersonal step is not meant to replace efforts to remedy systemic injustice, but is an immediate measure for addressing mistrust in occurrent cases. (shrink)

In this article, I develop a new account of the liberal view that principles of justice are meant to justify state coercion, and consider its implications for the question of global socioeconomic justice. Although contemporary proponents of this view deny that principles of socioeconomic justice apply globally, on my newly developed account this conclusion is mistaken. I distinguish between two types of coercion, systemic and interactional, and argue that a plausible theory of global justice should contain principles justifying both. The (...) justification of interactional coercion requires principles regulating interstate interference; that of systemic coercion requires principles of global socioeconomic justice. I argue that the proposed view not only helps us make progress in the debate on global justice, but also offers an independently compelling and systematic account of the function and conditions of applicability of justice. -/-. The phenomenon of self-anger has been overlooked in the contemporary literature on emotion. This is a failing we should seek to remedy. In this paper I provide the first ef-fort towards a philosophical characterization of self-anger. I argue that self-anger is a genuine instance of anger and that, as such, it is importantly distinct from the negative self-directed emotions of guilt and shame. Doing so will uncover a potentially distinctive role for self-anger in our moral psychology, as one of the (...) strongest affective motiva-tors for self-change. (shrink)

Se hace presente la necesidad de una ontología relacional para la teología (Hemmerle, 1996, p. 26) y la fenomenología actual ayuda a dar piso a esa ontología en cuanto muestra el fondo de la existencia, de la realidad, de la forma de aquello que está en el origen como dato dado. La donación se convierte así en la nueva concepción del ser, no el ser como esse, sino como donación y relación, como llamado originario y como respuesta existencial, así se (...) puede pensar una ontología trinitaria cristiana pero también plenamente humana. Which standards should we employ to evaluate the global order? Should they be standards of justice or standards of legitimacy? In this article, I argue that liberal political theorists need not face this dilemma, because liberal justice and legitimacy are not distinct values. Rather, they indicate what the same value, i.e. equal respect for persons, demands of institutions under different sets of circumstances. I suggest that under real-world circumstances – characterized by conflicts and disagreements – equal respect demands basic-rights protection (...) and democratic participation, which I here call ‘political justice’. I conclude the article by considering three possible configurations of the global order – the ‘democratic world-state’, ‘independent democratic states’, and ‘mixed’ models – and argue that a commitment to political justice speaks in favour of the latter. Moods have global and profound effects on our thoughts, motivations and behavior. To understand human behavior and cognition fully, we must understand moods. In this paper I critically examine and reject the methodology of conventional ?cognitive theories? of affect. I lay the foundations of a new theory of moods that identifies them with processes of our cognitive functional architecture. Moods differ fundamentally from some of our other affective states and hence require distinct explanatory tools. Paul Tillich no ha creado una propia escuela de pensamiento, pero ha influido sobre muchos pensadores. Abre el camino a posteriores reflexiones, desde diversos puntos metodológicos, sobre el problema ontológico, sobre la realidad de Dios y sobre la relación del Ser con la cultura. Se puede decir que, a partir de él, se abren caminos para pensar el papel de la mística en el conocimiento del (...) Being itself (el ser mismo), la relación dinámica en la vida del hombre, el darse del Ser como ágape, la correlación entre mística y cultura. Y Jean-Luc Marion lleva a su plenitud las ideas de Anselmo y Tillich: Dios no se piensa sino que se da. (shrink)

Moorean constructions are famously odd: it is infelicitous to deny that you believe what you claim to be true. But what about claiming that p, only to immediately put into question your evidence in support of p? In this paper, we identify and analyse a class of quasi-Moorean constructions, which we label counterevidentials. Although odd, counterevidentials can be accommodated as felicitous attempts to mitigate one’s claim right after making it. We explore how counterevidentials differ from lexicalised mitigation operators, parentheticals, and (...) anaphoric mitigation devices, and consider some cognate non-assertoric constructions. We conclude by exploring the implications of our analysis for theorising about linguistic responsibility, assertion, and lying. (shrink)

La pandemia del Covid19 es un acontecimiento entendido en la forma fenomenológica de su llegada y de su permanencia, pues irrumpe, cambia, afecta a la humanidad en su totalidad. No es un acontecimiento personal o territorial que se convierte en objeto de alguna disciplina en especial o responsabilidad de ciertos actores sociales. Más allá de la búsqueda de su origen o de las causas de su aparición, hay en ella una característica revelatoria que convoca, llama y pide una respuesta. Escuchar (...) la llamada y dar el responsorio es tarea obligada de la humanidad actual por encima de visiones sesgadas, parciales, culpabilizantes o escapistas. La enseñanza social de la Iglesia aporta, en este momento, una visión integral para afrontar el momento difícil mediante la acción y agencia de todos los seres humanos. La propuesta es una ética ecológica integral que reconozca la interconexión entre toda la realidad y proponga una acción de cuidado integral de la creación. (shrink)

Integral development as the most assertive path of sustainable development models is presented as a new paradigm in the social teaching of the church. It is a question of identifying the theoretical foundations that precede the encyclical Laudato Si’ (ls) from philosophy and theology: the harmony of quaternity, the mystique of creation, the science-faith dialogue and the theology of the small and the poor. At the same time it tries to recover and remember the reflections and teachings that are already (...) in the tradition of the church on the “common house”. Este trabajo tiene como objetivo mostrar lo que es una sana laicidad en la sociedad actual pluralista, multicultural, democrática y diversa. En primer lugar se presentan dos tentaciones de la iglesia hoy: refugiarse en el ghetto y cerrarse al mundo dando razón a los fundamentalistas laicos que la consideran como algo privado, o salir a la cruzada a imponer sus creencias y su mensaje. Luego se analiza el proceso histórico de formación del pluralismo, de la laicidad y de la libertad (...) religiosa con énfasis en los modelos norteamericano y francés. Se concluye con una visión de lo que es la laicidad en la doctrina de la iglesia católica hoy y una propuesta de lo que debe ser el verdadero pluralismo y la sana laicidad hoy. This article has as aim show what is a healthy secularism in the current pluralist, multicultural, democratic and diverse society. First, it presents two temptations of the church today: to shelter in the ghetto and to be closed to the world giving reason to the lay fundamentalists who consider faith to be something private, or to go out to the crusade to impose Christian beliefs and message. Then there is analyzed the historical process of formation of the pluralism, of the secularism and of the religious freedom emphatically in the models North American and French. The article concludes with a vision of what is the secularism in the doctrine of the catholic church today and a proposal of what must be the real pluralism and the healthy secularism today. Según varios filósofos del lenguaje contemporáneos, el argumento Frege-Geach plantea una objeción genuina para el expresivismo semántico. En el presente texto se sostiene que una manera eficaz de enfrentar y superar este argumento es modificando la concepción expresivista clásica. Se examinan el expresivismo clásico y el expresivismo mínimo y se propone una versión de este último que, a la vez que supera la objeción derivada del argumento Frege-Geach, tiene la ventaja de incluir dentro del espectro del expresivismo teorías que claramente (...) tienen este “espíritu” pero que la caracterización clásica deja fuera. This article documents our collaborative ongoing struggle to disrupt the reproduction of the coloniality of knowledge in the teaching of Gender Studies. We document how our decolonial feminist activism is actualised in our pedagogy, which is guided by feminist interpretations of ‘wonder’ (Irigaray, 1999; Ahmed, 2004; hooks, 2010) read alongside decolonial theory, including that of Ramón Grosfoguel, Walter D. Mignolo and María Lugones. Using notions of wonder as pedagogy, we attempt to create spaces in our classrooms where critical self-reflection and (...) critical intellectual and embodied engagement can emerge. Our attempts to create these spaces include multiple aspects or threads that, when woven together, might enable other ways of knowing-being-doing that works towards disrupting feminist complicity with coloniality in the Australian context. Este trabajo tiene como objetivo mostrar lo que es una sana laicidad en la sociedad actual pluralista, multicultural, democrática y diversa. En primer lugar se presentan dos tentaciones de la iglesia hoy: refugiarse en el ghetto y cerrarse al mundo dando razón a los fundamentalistas laicos que la consideran como algo privado, o salir a la cruzada a imponer sus creencias y su mensaje. Luego se analiza el proceso histórico de formación del pluralismo, de la laicidad y de la libertad (...) religiosa con énfasis en los modelos norteamericano y francés. Se concluye con una visión de lo que es la laicidad en la doctrina de la iglesia católica hoy y una propuesta de lo que debe ser el verdadero pluralismo y la sana laicidad hoy. This article has as aim show what is a healthy secularism in the current pluralist, multicultural, democratic and diverse society. First, it presents two temptations of the church today: to shelter in the ghetto and to be closed to the world giving reason to the lay fundamentalists who consider faith to be something private, or to go out to the crusade to impose Christian beliefs and message. Then there is analyzed the historical process of formation of the pluralism, of the secularism and of the religious freedom emphatically in the models North American and French. The article concludes with a vision of what is the secularism in the doctrine of the catholic church today and a proposal of what must be the real pluralism and the healthy secularism today. Much contemporary political philosophy claims to be Kant-inspired, but its aims and method differ from Kant's own. In his recent book, Force and Freedom, Arthur Ripstein advocates a more orthodox Kantian outlook, presenting it as superior to dominant (Kant-inspired) views. The most striking feature of this outlook is its attempt to ground the whole of political morality in one right: the right to freedom, understood as the right to be independent of others’ choices. Is Ripstein's Kantian project successful? In this (...) research note I argue that it is not. First, I suggest that Ripstein's notion of freedom is viciously circular. It is meant to ground all rights, but in fact it presupposes an account of those rights. Second, I show that—independently of its inability to ground a whole political morality—such a moralized understanding of freedom is normatively unappealing. (shrink)

The new Christian humanism is not about concepts and theories. It is a mystical experience of the centrality of Jesus Christ, of His face of mercy, of love given and delivered. Love is the gift that we must accept and respond to with love, especially with an ethic of love that makes us stand in solidarity with nature, with each other, and with the poor in a special way. Feminists debate whether women can autonomously embrace their own subordination. Some argue that it is the process of identifying with desires and values that matters; others, that it is the content of the desires and values that matters. In this paper, I introduce a novel class of cases of ‘thwarted autonomy,’ in which women pursue autonomy but in ways that reinforce gendered subordination, and draw on these cases to develop an expressivist view of women’s autonomy. On this view, agents must (...) embody desires and values in the social world if they are to achieve self-understanding, such that the social world mediates the relation-to-self. Oppressive meanings and norms can channel this expressive activity in ways that violate women’s physical integrity and involve self-abnegation that is incompatible with autonomy. (shrink)

The orthodox view of anger takes desires for revenge or retribution to be central to the emotion. In this paper, I develop an empirically informed challenge to the retributive view of anger. In so doing, I argue that a distinct desire is central to anger: a desire for recognition. Desires for recognition aim at the targets of anger acknowledging the wrong they have committed, as opposed to aiming for their suffering. In light of the centrality of this desire for recognition, (...) I argue that the retributive view of anger should be abandoned. I consider and dismiss two types of moves that can be made on the part of a proponent of the orthodox view in response to my argument. I propose that a pluralist view, which allows for both retribution and recognition in anger, is to be preferred. (shrink)

Philosophical discussion of human rights has long been monopolised by what might be called the ‘natural-law view’. On this view, human rights are fundamental moral rights which people enjoy solely by virtue of their humanity. In recent years, a number of theorists have started to question the validity of this outlook, advocating instead what they call a ‘political’ view. My aim in this article is to explore the latter view in order to establish whether it constitutes a valuable alternative to (...) the ‘natural-law view’. In particular, I distinguish between three ways in which human rights can be political: in relation to their (1) iudicandum, (2) justification and (3) feasibility constraints. I argue that it makes sense to think of human rights as political in relation to both their iudicandum and their justification but in a way that is not always adequately captured by proponents of the political view. Moreover, I also claim that, if we take the political view seriously, we still need to engage in the sort of abstract moral reasoning that characterises the natural-law approach and which proponents of the political view significantly downplay. The definitions and conceptualizations of health, and the management of healthcare have been challenged by the current global scenarios (e.g., new diseases, new geographical distribution of diseases, effects of climate change on health, etc.) and by the ongoing scholarship in humanities and science. In this paper we question the mainstream definition of health adopted by the WHO—‘a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity’ (WHO in Preamble to the constitution of (...) the World Health Organization as adopted by the international health conference, The World Health Organization, 1948)—and its role in providing tools to understand what health is in the contemporary context. More specifically, we argue that this context requires to take into account the role of the environment both in medical theory and in the healthcare practice. To do so, we analyse WHO documents dated 1984 and 1986 which define health as ‘coping with the environment’. We develop the idea of ‘coping with the environment’, by focusing on two cardinal concepts: adaptation in public health and adaptivity in philosophy of biology. We argue that the notions of adaptation and adaptivity can be of major benefit for the characterization of health, and have practical implications. We explore some of these implications by discussing two recent case studies of adaptivity in public health, which can be valuable to further develop adaptive strategies in the current pandemic scenario: community-centred care and microbiologically healthier buildings. In this paper, we introduce an enactive account of loving as participatory sense-making inspired by the “I love to you” of the feminist philosopher Luce Irigaray. Emancipating from the fusionist concept of romantic love, which understands love as unity, we conceptualise loving as an existential engagement in a dialectic of encounter, in continuous processes of becoming-in-relation. In these processes, desire acquires a certain prominence as the need to know (the other, the relation, oneself) more. We build on Irigaray’s account of (...) love to present a phenomenology of loving interactions and then our enactive account. Finally, we draw some implications for ethics. These concern language, difference, vulnerability, desire, and self-transformation. (shrink)

Although the view that sees proper names as referential singular terms is widely considered orthodoxy, there is a growing popularity to the view that proper names are predicates. This is partly because the orthodoxy faces two anomalies that Predicativism can solve: on the one hand, proper names can have multiple bearers. But multiple bearerhood is a problem to the idea that proper names have just one individual as referent. On the other hand, as Burge noted, proper names can have predicative (...) uses. But the view that proper names are singular terms arguably does not have the resources to deal with Burge’s cases. In this paper I argue that the Predicate View of proper names is mistaken. I first argue against the syntactic evidence used to support the view and against the predicativist’s methodology of inferring a semantic account for proper names based on incomplete syntactic data. I also show that Predicativism can neither explain the behaviour of proper names in full generality, nor claim the fundamentality of predicative names. In developing my own view, however, I accept the insight that proper names in some sense express generality. Hence I propose that proper names—albeit fundamentally singular referential terms—express generality in two senses. First, by being used as predicates, since then they are true of many individuals; and second, by being referentially related to many individuals. I respond to the problem of multiple bearerhood by proposing that proper names are polyreferential, and also explain the behaviour of proper names in light of the wider phenomenon I called category change, and show how Polyreferentialism can account for all uses of proper names. According to theoretical work on epistemic injustice, baseless discrediting of the knowledge of people with marginalized social identities is a central driver of prejudice and discrimination. Discrediting of knowledge may sometimes be subtle, but it is pernicious, inducing chronic stress and coping strategies such as emotional avoidance. In this research, we sought to deepen the understanding of epistemic injustice’s impact by examining emotional responses to being discredited and assessing if marginalized social group membership predicts these responses. We conducted a novel (...) series of three experiments (Total N = 1690) in which participants (1) shared their factual knowledge about how a game worked or their personal feelings about the game; (2) received discrediting feedback (invalidating remarks), validating feedback (affirming remarks), or insulting feedback (general negative social evaluation); and then (3) reported their affect. In all three studies, on average, affective responses to discrediting feedback were less negative than to insulting feedback, and more negative than to validating feedback. Participants who shared their knowledge reported more negative affect after discrediting feedback than participants who shared their feelings. There were consistent individual differences, including a twice-replicated finding of reduced negative affect after receiving discrediting and insulting feedback for Black men compared to White men and women and Black women. Black men’s race-based traumatic symptom scores predicted their affective responses to discrediting and insulting feedback, suggesting that experience with discrimination contributed to the emotional processing of a key aspect of epistemic injustice: remarks conveying baseless discrediting of knowledge. In this article I present a disagreement between classical and constructive approaches to predicativity regarding the predicative status of so-called generalised inductive definitions. I begin by offering some motivation for an enquiry in the predicative foundations of constructive mathematics, by looking at contemporary work at the intersection between mathematics and computer science. I then review the background notions and spell out the above-mentioned disagreement between classical and constructive approaches to predicativity. Finally, I look at possible ways of defending the constructive (...) predicativity of inductive definitions. (shrink)

Just as different sciences deal with different facts—say, physics versus biology—so we may ask a similar question about normative theories. Is normative political theory concerned with the same normative facts as moral theory or different ones? By developing an analogy with the sciences, we argue that the normative facts of political theory belong to a higher— more coarse-grained—level than those of moral theory. The latter are multiply realizable by the former: competing facts at the moral level can underpin the same (...) facts at the political one. Consequently, some questions that moral theories answer are indeterminate at the political level. This proposal offers a novel interpretation of John Rawls’s idea that, in public reasoning, we should abstract away from comprehensive moral doctrines. We contrast our distinction between facts at different levels with the distinction between admissible and inadmissible evidence and discuss some implications for the practice of political theory. Outlaw emotions are emotions that stand in tension with one’s wider belief system, often allowing epistemic insight one may have otherwise lacked. Outlaw emotions are thought to play crucial epistemic roles under conditions of oppression. Although the crucial epistemic value of these emotions is widely acknowledged, specific accounts of their epistemic role(s) remain largely programmatic. There are two dominant accounts of the epistemic role of emotions: The Motivational View and the Justificatory View. Philosophers of emotion assume that these dominant ways (...) of accounting for the epistemic role(s) of emotions in general are equipped to account for the epistemic role(s) of outlaw emotions. I argue that this is not the case. I consider and dismiss two responses that could be made on behalf of the most promising account, the Justificatory View, in light of my argument, before sketching an alternative account that should be favoured. Is democracy a requirement of justice or an instrument for realizing it? The correct answer to this question, I argue, depends on the background circumstances against which democracy is defended. In the presence of thin reasonable disagreement about justice, we should value democracy only instrumentally (if at all); in the presence of thick reasonable disagreement about justice, we should value it also intrinsically, as a necessary demand of justice. Since the latter type of disagreement is pervasive in real-world politics, I (...) conclude that theories of justice designed for our world should be centrally concerned with democracy. (shrink)

Anger is often an appropriate reaction to harms and injustices, but is it a politically beneficial one? Martha Nussbaum (Journal of the American Philosophical Association 1 (1), 41–56, 2015, Anger and Forgiveness. Oxford University Press, 2016) has argued that, although anger is useful in initially recruiting agents for action, anger is typically counterproductive to securing the political aims of those harmed. After the initial shockwave of outrage, Nussbaum argues that to be effective at enacting positive social change, groups and individuals (...) alike, must move quickly out of the state of anger. Feminist theorists (Frye, The Politics of Reality. Crossing Press, 1983; Lorde, 1997; Narayan, Hypatia 3 (2): 31–48, 1988) on the other hand have for long highlighted the efficacy of anger, as well as its moral and epistemic value, in fighting against the oppressive status quo. It might be thought therefore that for political action to be effective, a continued state of anger is preferable. Protestors must after all create and sustain a sense of moral obligation and justice. A main way of doing so is to promote successive moral shocks that trigger outrage (Jasper, Emotion Review 6 (3): 208–213, 2014). I present a novel, empirically informed defense of anger’s efficacy in political action. Nussbaum holds a traditional view on the nature of anger, inherited from Aristotle and the Stoics, which holds that anger constitutively involves a desire for retribution. The view that anger is counterproductive falls out of this and is dominant in academic work as well as in our personal and political lives. Based on work in social psychology, I argue that we need to reconsider this. In doing so, I highlight anger’s aim for recognition, rather than retribution, as key. Furthermore, I uncover conditions for anger’s political efficacy, as well as reasons for why the traditional view of anger has been so pervasive. (shrink)

Various philosophers authors have argued—on the basis of powerful examples—that we can have compelling moral or practical reasons to believe, even when the evidence suggests otherwise. This paper explores an alternative story, which still aims to respect widely shared intuitions about the motivating examples. Specifically, the paper proposes that what is at stake in these cases is not belief, but rather acceptance—an attitude classically characterized as taking a proposition as a premise in practical deliberation and action. I suggest that acceptance’s (...) theoretical usefulness in the ethics of belief has been hidden by its psychological obscurity. I thus aim to develop an empirically adequate and mechanistically specific psychological profile of acceptance. I characterize acceptance as centrally involving a cognitive gating function, in which we prevent a target belief state from having its characteristic downstream effects on reasoning, cognition, and action, and restructure those downstream processes. I then argue that there is substantial empirical support for the existence of the cognitive mechanisms needed to instantiate this view, coming from the science of emotion regulation. I argue that acceptance involves deploying the same mechanisms used in emotional response modulation to belief states: acceptance is doxastic response modulation. I then propose that having a better understanding of the psychological profile of acceptance leaves us better positioned to appreciate its potential usefulness for making progress on various puzzles within the ethics of belief. It's widely accepted that social facts about an individual's linguistic community can affect both the reference of her words and the concepts those words express. Theorists sympathetic to the internalist tradition have sought to accommodate these social dependence phenomena without altering their core theoretical commitments by positing deferential reference-fixing criteria. In this paper, we sketch a different explanation of social dependence phenomena, according to which all concepts are individuated in part by causal-historical relations linking token elements of thought.

ABSTRACT Theories of sets such as Zermelo Fraenkel set theory are usually presented as the combination of two distinct kinds of principles: logical and set-theoretic principles. The set-theoretic principles are imposed ‘on top’ of first-order logic. This is in agreement with a traditional view of logic as universally applicable and topic neutral. Such a view of logic has been rejected by the intuitionists, on the ground that quantification over infinite domains requires the use of intuitionistic rather than classical logic. In (...) the following, I consider constructive set theories, which use intuitionistic rather than classical logic, and argue that they manifest a distinctive interdependence or an entanglement between sets and logic. In fact, Martin-Löf type theory identifies fundamental logical and set-theoretic notions. Remarkably, one of the motivations for this identification is the thought that classical quantification over infinite domains is problematic, while intuitionistic quantification is not. The approach to quantification adopted in Martin-Löf’s type theory is subtly interconnected with its predicativity. I conclude by recalling key aspects of an approach to predicativity inspired by Poincaré, which focuses on the issue of correct quantification over infinite domains and relate it back to Martin-Löf type theory. When and why do socially constructed norms—including the laws of the land, norms of etiquette, and informal customs—generate moral obligations? I argue that the answer lies in the duty to respect others, specifically to give them what I call “agency respect.” This is the kind of respect that people are owed in light of how they exercise their agency. My central thesis is this: To the extent that (i) existing norms are underpinned by people’s commitments as agents and (ii) they (...) do not conflict with morality, they place moral demands on us on agency-respect grounds. This view of the moral force of socially constructed norms, I suggest, is superior to views that deny the moral force of such norms, and it elegantly explains certain instances of wrongdoing that would otherwise remain unaccounted for. In this paper I lay the foundations for the construction of an affective quality space. I begin by outlining what quality spaces are, and how they have been constructed for sensory qualities across different perceptual modalities. I then turn to tackle four obstacles that an affective quality space might face that would make an affective quality space unfeasible. After showing these obstacles to be surmountable, I propose a number of conditions and methodological constraints that should be satisfied in attempts to (...) construct an affective quality space.
